A planning application has been approved for a new public statue in Gourock to honour one of the world’s greatest ever yachtsmen - Charlie Barr, a native of the town who became an icon of international sailing over a century ago.

Plans have been lodged for a new statue to be erected in honour of a long-forgotten Gourock hero who remains one of the world's greatest yachtsmen of all time more than a century after his death.

It's a four-kilometre walk up the Barcelona coast from Ben Ainslie's America's Cup base to an apartment overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Within it you will find the descendant of a man who was quite remarkable and is long forgotten.
