Inverclyde’s Best Home Three Finalists Revealed
The three finalists still in the race to be crowned Inverclyde’s Best Home for 2025 have been revealed.
Last month the Telegraph showcased the eight amazing homes which had made our shortlist, before opening it up to Inverclyde’s public to decide who should make the final three.
John Thomson, Iris Potter and Angela McEwan (listed in no particular order) came out on top in the public vote and will now go through to the final round of our competition, which is sponsored The Greener Roof Co.
In the coming weeks our panel of judges will visit the homes of our final three and give their verdict on the properties before announcing their top pick for Inverclyde's Best Home 2025.
Our industry experts are Marco Rebecchi, of Rebecchi Architectural; Fiona McArthur, of McArthur Scott; and Mariessa Devlin, of Devlin Interior Design.
But before we bring you the judges’ thoughts on each home, here’s a reminder of the three homes the public voted for which are in contention for the top prize.
Iris Potter – Alderwood Road, Port Glasgow
Iris Potter’s home is lovingly maintained by her and her sister Janice in a heartfelt tribute to their dad, Stewart Potter, who designed a built the property.
The four-bedroom detached house appears at street level to be a small bungalow, but once inside it opens up to become a spacious multi-storey home with a huge hall, a modern dining kitchen and a living room with a balcony overlooking the Clyde.
Speaking about her home, Iris said: "It's so special to us because it has memories of my dad.
"This land was like a jungle before, and my dad dug deep to create two levels below the house.
“I feel my dad is still here with us. He was so proud of this house."
John Thompson – Brisbane Street, Greenock
John’s quirky two-bedroom home is fitted out with antique treasures and handcrafted furnishings.
The ‘steampunk-style’ approach to restoring the Victorian-era property was inspired by John’s dad Jack Thomson, who helped design Gourock’s Café Continental restaurant.
Discussing the property, John said: “Every time I find a different antique or have an idea to add new elements, I just go for it.
“The industrial and steampunk design goes back to my great-great grandfather and the rustic look of that time.
“The theme runs throughout. I wanted the flat to be like a painting where all the rooms would mix together and flow.”
Angela McEwan – Eldon Street, Greenock
Angela McEwan and her husband Andrew have taken time and care to restore their home to its former glory – retaining the striking older features of the home while giving it plenty of eye-catching modern flourishes.
Angela, who works as a manager with ScotRail, was persuaded to enter the Tele's Inverclyde's Best Home competition by her many family and friends who have also fallen in love with her house.
Speaking about her home, Angela said: "What was really important to me was to keep all the imperfections, the things that made the house special.
"Downstairs was the servants' quarters - there were still cobbles on the floors, but it had all been shut up.
"I said to my son that a family like ours would have been the servants. Maybe that's why I love it so much, why I felt like I belonged.”
The eventual winner will be gifted £500 in John Lewis vouchers and a house portrait by an artist.
Thank you to all the shortlisted homes which were previously featured, each property was outstanding in its own right.
