Transforming a traditional wash house into a self-contained flat, and restructuring a garden to create a Mediterranean-inspired outdoor space, have been a labour of love for a Greenock couple.

Clare and Panos Arhimandritis have lived in their exquisite main door conversion on Union Street for 20 years.

The couple have chosen to put their magnificent property, which is currently up for sale, forward for Inverclyde’s Best Home to showcase its fantastic features and mark their two decades in the home before they move.

Their amazing property in Union Street has made it into the final eight of the competition. Clare's dad Harry Murray sadly passed away last year, and she and Panos are going to take on the family home in Gourock.

Clare said: "This was going to be our forever home. We moved here will the full intention of living here for the rest of our lives, but life has thrown us a curve ball.

“It's a wonderful family home and we’ve had amazing times here."

The beautiful property was built in 1855 and has been B-listed since 1971. Clare, 62, and Panos, 55, live in the home with their wee cat Ollie, 11. Their daughter Sophie, now 22, grew up in there too.

One of the most impressive features of the home is its adjoining self-contained flat, which has been crafted from the original servants’ quarters.

Clare and Panos rent the flat out on Airbnb, and people from all over the world come to stay. The apartment ranks in the top one per cent of accommodation on the site.

It has its own private entrance, and includes a double sofa bed, single sofa bed, kitchen appliances, and a bathroom, and people staying there have access to the garden.

Clare said the space at the bottom of the garden is her 'retreat'.

She and Panos completely transformed the original outdoor space to create an area full of beautiful colours, areas, and textures.

Clare said: "In the difficult times through covid, the garden gave me a lot of thinking space.

"It’s our oasis and we’re very proud of it. You get the sun all day and it changes through the seasons."

Clare and Panos had to start from scratch in terms of transforming the house when they moved in but have tried to retain as many of the home’s original features as possible.

Panos said: "We had to rip out flooring and fireplaces, and change all of the wall coverings, and we took everything right back."

The home now boasts features including Porcelanosa tiles, VitrA bathrooms, and Antico and Karndean flooring.

Panos said one of the first things that attracted the couple to the house was the view.

He said: "When you’re standing at the front door, you can look right through the house and out through the kitchen window, and the the view is amazing.

"It's definitely one of the things that we loved most about the house at the start."

Clare and Panos are thrilled to make it through to the final eight of Inverclyde's Best Home and are looking forward to the public vote.

Clare added: "Being part of the competition is a fitting end of an era for our time in the house."

All of the team at Bowman Rebecchi wish Clare and Panos luck with the competition.

66 Union Street is currently on the market for a fixed price of £385,000 with Bowman Rebecchi with full details below. This article appeared in the Greenock Telegraph.
