Bowman Rebecchi is delighted to welcome the owners of Gourock Ropeworks in Port Glasgow to our growing Factoring portfolio.
We are proud to have been appointed to support this exceptional development, which comprises 35 properties in total, taking over the management from a national factor from May 2026.
The building stands as a proud testament to Scotland’s rich industrial heritage, particularly its historic maritime and shipbuilding industries.
Originally serving a vital role in the global shipping trade, the Ropeworks produced ropes, sails, and canvas goods that were exported around the world. Its prominent location on Bay Street, close to the River Clyde, made it ideally positioned to support the thriving shipyards and maritime activity of the era.
Constructed in the 1860s, the impressive L-plan building occupies a prominent corner site on Bay Street. Designed in a distinctive industrial warehouse style, it is renowned for its striking red brick façade, expansive multi-pane factory windows, and robust steel framework, all characteristic features of Scotland’s early industrial architecture.
The building’s vast internal spaces, once home to rope-making machinery and busy production lines, have since been sensitively transformed into high-quality residential apartments, carefully preserving its historic character while providing modern living accommodation.
The Ropeworks is not only a symbol of Port Glasgow’s industrial strength, but also of architectural resilience. Its restoration has retained many original features, including exposed brickwork, cast iron columns, and impressive high ceilings, all of which celebrate the craftsmanship and ambition of the period in which it was built.
Today, Gourock Ropeworks is recognised as a Category A listed building, highlighting its national significance as one of Scotland’s finest surviving examples of industrial architecture.
It remains an important landmark within Port Glasgow, blending historical significance with contemporary residential living.
